Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESSA)
**formerly No child left behind (NCLB)**
ESSA is the new Act that has revamped and replaced NCLB. In terms of students with disabilities, ESSA requires the same academic achievement and content standards for ALL students. More specifically, ESSA states that only 1% of all students can receive alternative academic testing. As a result, students with disabilities are expected to have access to a comparable curriculum of their peers and demonstrate comparable performance on statewide assessments through Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
